Basic First Aid v Senior (Apply First Aid)

Imagine yourself relaxing in the comfort of your home and suddenly you hear a loud scream or crying. You discover one of your children bleeding or unconscious.  Or, while you are on a camping trip, one of your friends is bitten by a venomous snake.

What will you do? Are you one of those people who will just panic and be helpless? You don’t want to think about these frightening situations; however, it would make substantial difference if you were prepared for them. Being ready for emergencies does not only mean having a complete first aid kit but also knowing how to use it properly. Moreover, you cannot always rely on other people's expertise because what will you do if they are not with you or even worse, they are the person who needs the medical attention.

First Aid courses in Australia are given by registered training organisations that are licensed by the National Training Information System.

First Aid courses are categorized into three levels, but let me focus on the first two levels that most people take.

Level 1 or Basic First Aid Training...

teaches a person skills and knowledge on how to handle emergencies or life threatening situations where there are illnesses or accidents, may it be at home or in the workplace. The course is 8 hours long and is presented in one day. This course should be taken once every 3 years, while the CPR component of the training should be taken every year to maintain your skills.

Course outline:

  • Assessing the situation
  • Applying first aid CPR
  • Treatment of bleeding, allergies, infection, wounds, shock, choking and asthma Care of the unconscious person
  • Special techniques for children and infants
  • Reporting details of the incident

The students' competencies are assessed through quizzes, role playing and demonstration. After successfully completing the training they are given a Statement of Attainment which declares that they are eligible to provide Basic Emergency Life Support, a unit from the Health Training Package or HLTFA301B.

Level 2 or Senior First Aid Training...

is a 2 day course that runs for 15 hours. It covers all the topics taught in level 1, so you are prepared to handle emergency situations that involve injuries and illnesses. The Level 2 course is longer as there are several first aid treatments that are covered which were not fully discussed in level 1 or Basic First Aid Training.

Additional treatments that are included are:

  • Specialized treatment of burns, stings, electric shock, bites and poisons.

This course must be taken every 3 years while the CPR component must be taken every year to maintain your competency.

Just like the basic first aid, this course is updated every three years and the CPR component yearly. The students' competencies are assessed through quizzes, role playing and demonstration. Upon completion of the training the student is awarded a Statement of Attainment declaring that the student is qualified to Apply First Aid, a unit from the Health Training Package or HLTFA301B.
